Welcome to Year 1 and 2!

Our Teaching Team

Mrs. Gavrilovic: Monday to Wednesday

Mrs. Hooton: Thursday and Friday

We have had a wonderful start to the year, and it has been great getting to know all of you. Here’s to a year of amazing learning!

Our Learning Overview

Reading

Students will bring their reading books home daily. Please ensure your child reads to an adult at least three times a week, and ask them to have their reading record signed.

Homework

Homework will be set every Wednesday and should be returned before the following Friday. The expected homework includes:

  • 10-15 minutes of daily tasks, including reading to an adult
  • Approx. 1 hour of weekly homework (not including daily reading)
    • Practicing phonics
    • Spellings (linked to phonics)

Occasionally, project-based homework may be assigned over holiday periods. This will relate to upcoming topics and often encourages creativity through presentations such as posters, models, and journals. We also encourage participation in curriculum-based House Team competitions.

PE Lessons

PE classes will be taught by Mr. Wickens, Mr. Stead, and Mr. Sampson every Tuesday morning. Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit and removes any earrings on these days.

Learning in Nature

Every Wednesday afternoon, students will participate in Learning in Nature sessions. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, with items like waterproof jackets. Wellies may be needed later in the term. This dynamic outdoor learning environment fosters exploration, questioning, and physical activity, promoting a positive sense of well-being and supporting all areas of development.

English

Leaf

This term the children will be immersing themselves in the world of a polar bear! We will be linking our writing to the stunning picture book ‘Leaf’ by Sandra Diechmann. The children will be exploring the key themes of loneliness, friendship and the environment. They will extend their understanding of polar bears and their natural habitat. We will also explore the rich vocabulary that is used in the text. The children will write a setting description, and a recount based upon this key text.

Mathematics

The children will take part in 10 minutes of daily fluency which is based on choral counting, number bonds and times tables. Key Stage 1 will be completing the 'Mastering Number Programme' which supports the ability to quickly recall addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts through conceptual learning, fact strategies and memorisation. We begin the term with understanding number and consolidating place value. We will also be looking at building numbers, identifying their tens and ones and practising our addition and subtraction calculations within 10 and 20.

Science

Humans - Ourselves

This term this we will be exploring Biology. We will discuss and describe the human body and functions for the parts of our bodies. The children will have a chance to explore some of their senses in scientific investigations, The children will be encouraged to ask and answer their own questions about how humans stay healthy, through investigation and research.

Art

Paint and Lines

This term the children will be learning about the work of Molly Haslund. They will be using her artwork as inspiration to develop their drawing skills, experimenting with different mediums and developing their skills at drawing different lines and colouring. This will culminate in a final outcome which they will display and evaluate.

Computing

Programming - Robot Algorithms

Our learning will focus on ‘Programming’ and creating algorithms for Beebots and learning how to ‘debug’!

Online Safety

S - SMART

We will be learning all about E-safety and the importance of following the SMART rules. This includes self image and privacy, where we will look at what to do if someone online makes you feel upset or worried and who you should tell.

History

How have toys changed through time?

Our topic for History is 'Toys through time'. Here the focus is looking at concepts such as similarity and difference as well as old and new toys and how toys have changed through time. The children will be introduced to the idea of evidence, and they will develop the vocabulary to talk about times past. The final outcome will be a class-based toy museum where children can identify, sort and discuss a range of toys with confidence.

Music

Hey You!

All the learning in this unit will focus on one song "Hey You!" - a Hip-Hop song for children. This will be accompanied by other Hip-Hop songs. We will be listening to and appraising Hip-Hop classics and then composing and performing our own Hip-Hop tune.

Physical Education

Gymnastics (indoor) & Locomotion/Stability (outdoor)

This term our PE day will be a TUESDAY. We will be focusing on Locomotion (Agility) learning the skills of walking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping and dodging. In Gymnastics we we be learning to travel, jump and roll to make a sequence of movements. We will also be performing balances and using a range of low apparatus to showcase our travelling sequences.

Religious Education

Our Wonderful World - different creation stories

In RE we will be learning about 'Our Wonderful World' by exploring different creation stories.

PSHE

Being Me

Our JIGSAW topic in class will be ‘Being me in my world’. Here we will be taking Jigsaw Joe on the journey of understanding rights and responsibilities of being a member of the class, knowing your views are always valued within the class and recognising choices can sometimes lead to consequences.
